Bridal party leaving the church |
When the finance officer at the college invited me to his wedding, I blown away and filled with anticipation. It was a fantastic day, with many similarities to weddings back home, but also so many differences. The general format was similar, starting with a church service around noon and then progressing to a reception party afterwards. ![]() |
Arriving at the reception |

The church service was conducted in Lhukonzo, the local language in Kasese, except for the obligatory mention of the "special guest" (meaning myself, the only white man there) right in the middle of the proceedings.

Kids crowd out the reception venue |
With 6 groomsmen, 6 bridesmaids and over 400 guests, it was a massive wedding by Western standards but pretty normal for Uganda. You can then be assured that many others who live near the reception venue will come along as well, especially the kids

Director of Liberty College handing over a goat to the bride and groom |
The day progressed with some speeches, followed by a huge meal which we ate with our hands and prepared by the catering students from Liberty College. The presentation of the gifts was a big part of the day, a highlight being two goats and many other great gifts
The cutting of the cake was also a big part of the day, including the bride and groom feeding each other pieces of cake, along the lines of trying to make the other one eat first, which had guests falling off their seats in laughter.
